Revelation is a key biblical concept with deep theological and spiritual implications.
What is revelation?
Revelation is God making Himself known. It’s not just “new information” or a strong feeling. It’s God taking the first step so people can know who He is, what He’s like, and what He’s doing in the world. Without revelation, we’re left guessing. With revelation, we’re given clarity and invited into relationship with the God who speaks.
Revelation in the Bible
The Bible presents revelation as God speaking in real ways, at real times, to real people—through creation, through prophets, through Scripture, and most fully through Jesus. Hebrews 1:1–2 captures it simply: God spoke in many ways in the past, and in the end He has spoken through His Son. Jesus is not just a messenger with a message—He is God made known.
Types of revelation
General revelation
What people can know about God through creation and conscience. It shows there is a Creator, but it doesn’t explain the gospel on its own.
Special revelation
God’s clear communication through Scripture and His saving work in history—most clearly revealed in Jesus Christ.
Progressive revelation
God reveals His plan over time. The Bible unfolds like a story, becoming clearer until it reaches its fulfilment in Christ.
Common mistake
Revelation isn’t the same as “I had a feeling” or “I saw a sign”. God can guide you, but Christian revelation is anchored in what God has already spoken—especially in Scripture and in Jesus. Personal impressions should be tested, not treated as equal to God’s Word.

If you’ve ever read a verse and it suddenly clicked—like you finally understood what God was saying to you—that’s a simple example of revelation: truth being brought into the open and applied to your life.
